Predictions: Plausible or Outlandish?
Ten years ago, I caught up with the Hogwarts own seer, Professor Trelawney, to see how she was doing after the Battle of Hogwarts. When I reached out to Professor Trelawney, she had been making a lot of predictions, about the futures of some of our heroes. I recorded the prophecies that she predicted that day.
Today, on the 10 year anniversary of the Second Wizarding War, we analyze the prophecies made by Professor Trelawney to determine the strength of her powers and credibility of her lineage. To no surprise, Professor Trelawney predictions she made were wildly inaccurate on a magnitudinal scale. I am here to clear up the confusion that she traditionally caused.
The first prophecy Trelawney made was referring to Luna Lovegood,
"I cast myself 10 years into the future... I see... I see... a girl with radish earrings and flowing long curly blonde hair and what appears to a wedding band! Yes, yes, she will be married. A mimbulus mimbletonia has popped out at me... oh yes... a boy who loves herbology is who she will marry."
Luna Lovegood, who has begun work as a Magizoologist and is happily married to Rolf Scamander. They have two children Lorcan and Lysander. That one was a bust.
The second prophecy she made involved our one and only Rubeus Hagrid,
"I see... a giant beside a man half his size, I see ... dragons flying overhead. My inner eye sees Rubeus Hagrid will move to Romania and raise dragons with his brother Grawp."
As my sources reveal Mr. Hagrid is still working at Hogwarts school as gamekeeper and is still single, despite his past involvement with Madame Maxime.
The third prophecy concerned a one named George Weasley,
"The crystal ball is showing me a red haired twin, but I see another twin... no, no, not his lost twin ...but another, a female. She too has been lonely ... Pavarti Patil will be the other half to him, they will marry and move to Egypt... as my ball is showing me lots of sand."
However, my sources report that George indeed has married Angelina Johnson and they had a son named Fred and a daughter Roxanne. Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes is still owned by him and Ronald Weasley now works there too.
The fourth prophecy belonged to Hermione Granger,
"Oh silly girl. I never perceived much aura around her. But this isn’t about her receptivity to the resonances of the future but rather the future that lays upon her. Let me see... I see kids, many of them... she will carry half a dozen, some two at a time... yes, yes, she will give birth four times, twice two at a time... and she will lose the battle to childbirth at the birth of her last twins... oh my, that girl..."
As most of our readers know, Hermione Granger has borne one child. With all of the “hard” work she has been putting into her job at the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, I highly doubt many more kids will be on their way. But maybe just one more? We shall see...
The fifth prophecy was for Ginny Weasley,
"Ginny Weasley, pretty girl. ahh, I almost don’t want to reveal what my inner eye is showing me. What a pity!! I see death, death... not far from now, maybe a month or two... but it is definitely coming... I am sorry to be the bearer of this news... I really am."
Well, as we all know, Ginny Weasley, now known as Ginny Potter, is still very much alive and now married to the Chosen One... Two kids and one more on the way... I think it’s safe to say that most of Professor Trelawney’s predictions have not come true.
The sixth prophecy was of Neville Longbottom,
"Oh Neville Longbottom, he was never very bright you know? But... What do I see here? My inner eye is showing me this and as unbelievable as this may seem, it is the truth. Neville will become a professor here at Hogwarts. Hard to believe I know, but it is true."
Well, she seems to have gotten one prediction right. Neville Longbottom is currently teaching Herbology at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is married to Hannah Abbott, a pretty girl he went to Hogwarts with.
The seventh prophecy was referring to Minerva McGonagall,
"Looking, looking ever so carefully, Minerva McGonagall is going to settle her commitments at Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She will inherit fifteen cats with long life spans, from the former Headmistress of Hogwarts, Dolores Umbridge. McGonagall, will indeed develop a cat allergy over time."
In reality, Professor McGonagall was given a high order of Merlin and eventually made her way onto Chocolate Frogs cards. She returned to Hogwarts and continued her duties there.
The eighth and final prophecy was for Draco Malfoy,
"Ahhh, yes... Draco... The protected child. An interesting future I see with him. Draco, I see is actually going back to work at Hogwart’s starting as an assistant to Argus Filch but quickly promoted to the Professor of the Defence Against the Dark Arts. Suspicion will rise but Malfoy will be considered a trust resource of knowledge."
Draco and his family avoided imprisonment after the Battle of Hogwarts. Draco eventually married Astoria Greengrass and they had one son together named Scorpius. But don’t worry, Draco inherited Malfoy Manor and continues to live a luxurious lifestyle with his parents' wealth.
It appears the future is hazy for those who try and see it. Sybill Trelawney despite her strong seer lineage, shows that sometimes the power of foresight is not meant for all to see. Her predictions that were made those long ten years ago after the Second Wizarding War have been falsely made. All predictions except the one about Neville Longbottom were false, but even a non-seer would be able to predict that Neville would become a herbology teacher. As a young boy he was invested in the study of herbs, according to his old classmates. The word outlandish comes to mind.
